Glamorgan Telecom Golf Day - 13th August 2009 at the 2010 Celtic Manor

28th August 2009

In association with our favoured Charity, the Wooden Spoon, we invited 50 pairs of golfers to the challenging 2010 Course at the Celtic Manor, where national honour was at stake in the Inaugural Glamorgan Telecom Wales v England Trophy.

Each team was captained by representative rugby greats, Gareth Edwards for the Welsh and Bill Beaumont for the English.

Following a hearty breakfast and inspiring words from the respective captains, the pairings commenced to battle on the difficult 2010 Ryder Cup course.

On a very warm summer afternoon, a close contest ensued.  With all scores counting towards their respective countries total, the final results were nip and tuck to the very end.

Prizes were also awarded for the best individual pairings:

1st  Catch 22 (England)
2nd  Giles Insurance (Wales)
3rd  B.A.M Nutall (England)

Following the golf, the invitees enjoyed the luxurious surroundings of the 2010 clubhouse, as each player eagerly anticipating the final result.

After a delicious three course meal of Welsh Lamb, and entertainment provided by Rod Woodward it came to the final results, and in a closely fought contest England ran out winners of our Inaugural event.

During the day and evening Wooden Spoon fundraising, hoped to have raised in excess of £15,000 to help continue their great work in the community.

On a personal note, just a quick thank you to all attendees, I hoped you enjoyed yourselves, and will join me in thanking the Celtic Manor for providing great surroundings and service to match.

See you all next year, where I hope for Welsh revenge.

Adrian Price
Glamorgan Telecom

"Wooden Spoon are delighted that the inaugural Wales v England Golf Challenge at the 2010 Ryder Cup Course at Celtic Manor was such a success.  The sun shone as our two teams of 25 couples were photographed with their team captains Gareth Edwards and Bill Beaumont respectively before our encounter on the Ryder Cup Course.  Bill made it clear early in the morning that he had never experienced a win on Welsh soil and so he was delighted when England ran out winners of the inaugural event.

Wooden Spoon would like to thank Glamorgan Telecom and CableStream for their generous sponsorship, also to Alan Davies and staff at the 2010 Club for making the day run so smoothly.  We enjoyed an excellent meal and some fine after-dinner entertainment from Rod Woodward and generous fundraising.  It was agreed by all that we should meet up again next year when the Welsh would endeavour to pluck back the trophy!"

Glamorgan Telecom is very proud to have The Wooden Spoon as their nominated charity for 2008.

1st March 2008

Wooden Spoon is rugby's charity supporting mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people. Spoon has committed to over £15 million in spending for a variety of projects for children and young people. It has organised over 2,000 events and had over 25,000 ties worn by its loyal members and supporters. Hardworking staff and volunteers have achieved all of this since the birth of the charity.

It all began on a fateful day in Dublin in 1983 when England's Five Nations season ended in disaster with defeat by Ireland leaving them languishing at the bottom of the table.

A group of English supporters were presented with a Wooden Spoon by their Irish opponents to mark this historic occasion. On returning home the proposal to play golf for the spoon attracted the interest of fellow English supporters. Over 100 people attended that golf day in Farnham and by the end of the evening £8450 had been raised. The funds were cashed in for a minibus purchased for the Park Special Needs School in Aylesbury. The charity was born...

Glamorgan Telecom is the leading provider of telecommunications solutions across Wales and the West and is very proud of the support that both customers and staff have shown to raising funds for the Wooden Spoon Charity.

It was a very exciting day for Glamorgan Telecom's Financial Director Adrian Price when he was able to donate a significant amount of money to Bob Harris of the Wooden Spoon Society.

Glamorgan Telecom is regularly involved in Charity Events whether it be Golf Events or Cardiff and London Marathons and look forward to many more days where support can be given to the Wooden Spoon throughout 2008.
